Lots of loose ends to tie!!!

Have you ever been working on so much stuff and you complete the project and move on to the next without maximizing what you have done? I think that is where I am at this present moment… I have been working on so much stuff and I complete my projects but immediately start on something else before I maximize the prior project. Well now that the photo shoot is out the way I can pick up a few things that I kind of put to the side. (By the way I am doing another photo shoot with Keston in March) and I will likely have a busy schedule the beginning of next year. I am in need of a schedule REVAMP!

I had planned on getting my book published and out on the shelves, and I have found a publisher that is not too expensive, but I kind of put it aside when the opportunity came for the shoot. When opportunity knocks you gotta answer the door. I am now working with Lulu Publishing to go ahead and finalize getting my book to print and it will be available in Barnes and Nobles, Amazon, and more. I will announce when I receive my first PRINTED copy!

I also have a marketing campaign that I worked on, that I put aside.
Well the Marketing campaign will launch THURSDAY OF NEXT WEEK—Stay tuned I will post an UNBEATABLE DEAL that I will announce on THURSDAY (DEC 11).

I have a possible trip planned for the month of January, and 2 shows to attend for February (Virginia and Atlanta), whether I will make them all depends on budget. The two in February are definite it’s the January photo shoot cruise trip that I am not sure if I am attending just yet.

Also there is the IBS show in NEWYORK in April (I MUST ATTEND) I have never been to this show but it is HUGE and I must be in the house.

I also started slacking on sending out my newsletter. It is so hard to manage it all. I am grateful though. I would much rather have to much to do then nothing at all. I am learning how to time manage and MAXIMIZE THE MOMENTS I do have in my day. I am going to pull out an old CD from my church (New Light Christian Center Church) from the business strategies conference (by BEN GILBERT) and refresh my mind and meditate on ways to maximize the creative ideas, and projects I have already completed. Thanks for listening to my ramblings…. More announcements to come soon!

Photo Shoot Success

Hi everyone! It’s me Magic…. My plans were to blog everyday regarding the photo shoot but I became so busy with everything that I was not able to… Anyhow my photo shoot was Sunday and it was a GIANT SUCCESS!!! All of the models were gorgeous, and everything flowed really smoothly. The pictures are BREATH TAKING and I can’t wait to get my hands on the CD!

I enjoyed working with all the models and the photographer (Keston Duke), Keston was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot…. The makeup artist (Make up by Andrea) was also FABULOUS! We were able to get everything done by 3pm! I will post a few of the photos soon.
Photo shoots demand a lot of your time, planning, and energy (not to mention $ $ $).

Here is what happened from start to finish…The first thing I did was hire a photographer.
For those of you who do not know a photographer I suggest you find one who specializes in whatever type of event or shoot you are conducting. When I came across Keston, I was calling him to ask him just that and decided well if I am shooting beauty work, why not use the best person in this area (Keston Duke), and I am so glad I did… For those of you who don’t know, Keston has done shoots for hair giants such as my mentor, Miki Wright, Patric Antonio Bradley, Barry Fletcher, and Salon Sense Magazine. He has had numerous covers on Black Beauty, and work appearing in Sophisticate’s Black Hair monthly. Check out his website:
www.kestonduke.com

Now that I had a photographer, I began the planning phase, counted up cost, mapped out the hairstyles I would be creating and wrote everything out… I even did a dry run on my mannequin of each style and took photos.

The next thing I had to do was find wardrobe, well since this was a bridal shoot; I had to find dresses (wedding dresses). Well my first thought was to use a designer and loan the dresses for credit in the magazine publication. Well that didn’t work out and it just became frustrating. All of the driving around, phone calls and no one came through. At this point I was on the phone to both (Miki—my mentor and Keston—the photographer), telling them about the frustration of trying to find dresses. They both suggested consignment shops, thrift stores, etc. Well I took their advice and went to Salvation Army and when I walked in the door, there they were! It was like the dresses were meant just for me because I asked the manager what kind of deal could I get if I was buying 5 of them since they were marked $50-$99 each. Well I end up paying about $30 each for them, and the same day I walked out with 5 dresses.

Then I had to find out how to have them cleaned. So I called David’s Bridal and asked if they cleaned dresses, and they said not if you didn’t buy them here… When I explained to her what I was trying to do, she asked me to bring them in and she would tell me how to clean them. SECRET: She told me many bridal stores take the dresses put them in a body pillow or sheet, pin it up and put in the washing machine on gentle cycle and wash with OXI CLEAN… Now the ability to do this depends on the fabric so if you are on a budget like I was, make sure you consult a professional before you try cleaning a foreign fabric yourself. Well I followed her exact instructions and the dresses came out perfect! I steamed them and they looked like NEW!

Well then I had dresses, hairstyles but no models… Well Keston put in a casting call and we got so many responses I hardly knew where to start. Keston was a great help on this part. He pretty much hand selected each one of my models and what a great job he did.

The next thing I had to do was make sure I had a makeup artist. This process was VERY TOUGH for me and what I learned was, when you are selecting someone that will be working with you, they have to desire success just as much as you. They also, have to be gracious, humble, and willing to take constructive criticism if necessary. I also wanted an artist who viewed this as an opportunity just as much as I did and not as if they were doing me a favor because it was a time for print/cd assignment. After all, they were reaping the benefits of me paying all the expenses and getting the BEST portfolio (coming from KESTON DUKE) not to mention being published in THE LARGEST hair magazine in the US…. The above qualities my first two selections LACKED in one way or another… Then I thought to call Andrea… Andrea use to be my student in cosmetology school, and she loved makeup back then. As far back as I could remember she was always gracious, humble, professional, even then… So I gave her a call and luckily she was free and I am very happy I did…. Her personality and attitude is GREAT, and THE MAKEUP WAS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!!

Then I had to find someone to be my helper for the day, and since I was in “assistant limbo” I called on a friend of mine DIANE and she was a GREAT help! She ran around helped models get dressed, assisted “busy Keston”, “busy Marta”, brought breakfast, helped unpack, repack and about a million other things I probably didn’t see her do.

Thank you MIKI, KESTON, MODELS, ANDREA, & DIANE for making all of this possible!!! I could not have done it without you and we made an amazing team.

I will be posting a few of the pictures soon so stay tuned…

P.S. I received word from Keston yesterday that Sophisticate’s wants to order ALL of the photos he has submitted to them! I am so excited!!!! I will announce what issue in 2009, soon….. YEAAAAAAAAAA

UNRELATED TO HAIR

NOT SO HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

Well mother’s day is once again upon us and this is a holiday that I always dread. You see on January 4, 2005 I lost my first child to SIDS. As far as we knew, a healthy baby that all of a sudden just died…. My son Khalil was 9 weeks and one day old. Some days for me are better than others but on the really bad days I have a great support group for Moms who have lost children to SIDS to help get through the rougher days. It is so hard for me this time of year because even though this year my son would have been 4 years old (11/3) it seems like just yesterday that this all happened. A lot of times I have to pretend. Pretend that I am not hurting; pretend that everything is OK when it’s really not. I think what hurts the most that the day of me finding him deceased is BURNED into my memory, but many of the great memories of me holding him, his smell, the way he would cry, or be comforted by me, some of those things I don’t remember like I use to. What I HATE is that people expect you to just “GET OVER IT”, like ok so he is not here anymore. It is so hard to listen to other mothers speak of their children growing and doing things only wishing that my son was here to grow as well. So on this mother’s day instead of being with my son I get to go visit a grave and it HURTS. Time does heal though, because I used to hang on to ALL of his things from his bottles that still had his formula in it, to his clothes, to his diaper genie. Over time, little by little, I have gotten rid of these things and only kept things that I would really need when I conceive again. Even that has been a frustrating process, but we are trying again…. Nothing thus far has happened yet but the word of GOD says seek he first and all these things will be added unto you so that is what I am doing.

Have you noticed?
A wife that has lost her husband is a widow.
A husband that has lost his wife is a widower.
A child that has lost their parents is an orphan, but
There are no words to describe a parent that has lost a child.

HAIR CARE TIPS #3

Black Hair Care BASICS

There are just some things that are basic in addition to diet and vitamins when it comes to botanizing healthy hair.

Ok so you are taking your vitamins and changed your diet, so you say “What’s next when it comes to maintaining my hair. A HAPPY scalp is a HEALTHY scalp. It’s good to massage your scalp on a regular basis to increase oil production, and increase circulation.

Shampoo you hair and scalp no more than once per week. More than that will tend to dry the hair.

Try to avoid heat when possible, if styling at home, try air drying instead of blow drying, excessive heat in combination with a relaxers is a recipe for disaster.

Sleep with a satin scarf or sleep cap on or satin pillow case. This helps avoid split ends caused by the rubbing of your hair against a "rough" cotton pillow case. It also avoids moisture being wicked out of your hair into your cotton pillow case.

NEVER use a super relaxer. I have seen the thickest heads of hair imaginable and the same results can be achieved with a REGULAR relaxer.

Avoid overuse of products with mineral oil or petroleum. These products tend to block the pores and are not readily absorbed. Just because your mom used Vaseline on your hair, does not mean you have to! Stay tuned for more to come!

SALON INSANITY

I recently joined a black hair forum, because I love to talk about hair, get information and perhaps pickup something I haven’t learned. There was a topic in the forum that I would like to discuss. The comment was that this customer had an appointment at 2:00 to get her hair done; arrived at 1:45 and said the stylist had five people waiting ahead of her. This is a common problem in African American hair salons… I have worked in 4 privately owned salons and 1 “salon chain” before I made the decision to become mobile. I am a firm believer in not over booking. Many times it was just better to increase my price and offer a better service than to overbook. Some of the problems I faced in the salons were that it was not enough space or equipment to accommodate the customers, a lot of times my customers had to wait for a dryer or wait for the shampoo bowl. There was one salon that I worked in where a person would shampoo for you, but you had to pay her $5 for each shampoo. Not too bad, and it definitely helped save time. The problem I had was the she was not licensed. When it came to building clientele, my clientele was building, but when you are starting out with no customers and you only make $300-$400 for the week and have to give up $160 for booth rent you are not left with much. What if it is an extremely slow week? That does happen from time to time, and at all the salons I worked at it didn’t matter because your booth rent was still due! In a couple of the salons I struggled because there was NO walk-ins, walk ins were RARE… Another problem that I HATED in the salons was the GOSSIP and the MESS. I could not stand it! It was just too much to handle, and because I didn’t get involved in the DRAMA I was labeled “Anti-social” or “SNOOTY/BOOSCHIE”. In the chain salon I faced a different problem. There were PLENTY of walk-ins, and there I WORKED MY BUT OFF. I would make like $1000-$1500 in revenue for the salon per week but you know how much of that was on my pay check? About $500.00 which still was not enough. I felt like I was being ROBBED! I became fed up, I could not take working in the salons ANYMORE…. Like I said INSAINITY is doing the same action over and over again but expecting a different result. Let’s just say I am not “HAIR INSANE” any more.
I decided to first take a break from hair period… But because I have to pay bills, I decided to go back to corporate America for a while and then start my own company… I just want to say that starting MY OWN was the best thing I could have ever done, I LOVE working for myself! While it is taking time to build it up, once it builds…..well just look for me on the millionaire list……

A DYNAMIC DIVA!

There is a wonderful website that I came across; this is an African American self made millionaire who went from being homeless, to millionaire status in 1 year. WOW! This gave me so much HOPE and ENCOURAGEMENT. Just to know that I will not always be living (check to check) to pay bills. I am ready to be a blessing to others and tell my store and testimony so that others can PROSPER also. She has a wealth of information on her website information about credit improvement, health, love, marriage, everything you can think of! She is right here in Houston… Her name is Elon Bomani.

HAIR INSANITY TIP#1

Let’s start from the inside and work our way out. For starters, let’s talk about NUITRTION. This is probably the single most important factor to having healthy hair. Just like any part of the body, the hair needs certain nutrients in certain amounts to be healthy. Have you ever been pregnant and wondered why your hair and nails grew so much, but then after the baby every thing came to a hault? It’s because of VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS. We take them all during or pregnancy, but stop after we have the baby. The problem is that the average person’s diet (even when not pregnant) doesn’t supply the vital nutrients that we need. Vitamins are so important. I am guilty sometimes of eating out a lot because of time, and it is so important to take vitamins to help the body get some of those nutrients that your diet may lack. This directly affects the amount of growth and general health of the scalp and the hair.
Water flushes the body's systems of toxins that can cause geneal health, skin, and hair problems. I admit that I have to force myself sometimes to drink water but i am striving to increase my water intake daily. I have found that ading a little lemon juice helps me to drink increased amounts of water. So the very first step to growing healthy hair is to FIND A GOOD VITAMIN SUPPLEMENT, and TAKE IT DAILY. Drink six to eight glasses of water daily. Be sure the vitamin include B6, B12, Niacin, Biotin, pantothenic acid and folic acid – the elements found in healthy hair.
Stay Tuned for more tips.....

HAIR INSANITY--INTRODUCTION

When people ask me about growing their hair, and ask me “How did you get your hair so bouncy and healthy?” The first thing that I tell them is Patience and Commitment. It takes time to grow your hair. It takes commitment to doing things to restore damaged hair, and “Train” your hair. What I hope to provide are practices you can do to get your hair into a healthy state and then maintain it! HAIR INSANITY—Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. ARE YOU HAIR INSANE? Are you relaxing, overprocessing, blow drying, heat styling, highlighting, and seeing the results of your MADNESS? Well get ready to “STOP THE INSAINITY” with hair tips to forever change the way you maintain your hair. Stay tuned……

VENT SESSION

Yesterday I got called in the office at my place of employment because I had my personal laptop on my desk. HOW STUPID IS THAT? I feel like I am bound by chains working for someone else. We can’t use our phones, we can’t surf the net, we can’t do this, and we can’t do that. I have never seen so much MICRO MANAGEMENT in my life. This is definitely NOT THE LIFE FOR ME!!! At work, all I can think about is self employment and I spend every minute of my lunch (and other minute I can sneak in) on my laptop trying to research more information on bringing high traffic to my website. When I am at home I stay up basically until I fall asleep at my laptop researching and reading information. I have found 2 really great e-books on driving more traffic to you website. I have already purchased one, and the other I will purchase on Friday. I rearranged some things on my website and I am testing out the tips that were given. If they work, I will most definitely share! The next thing that I will be researching is how to find start up capital (loans/grants) especially for people with BAD CREDIT…. STAY TUNED for more info!

DRIVING MORE TRAFFIC TO YOUR SITE- TIP#2

Ok, I was all hyped up about blog rush only to get DENIED for it being added to my blog... I didn’t read the terms of service very well. They do not approve membership if you don’t have at least 12 blogs already. Oh well, I will reapply shortly. MORALE OF THE STORY: ALWAYS READ COMPLETELY THE TERMS OF SERVICE. I think I just SKIMMED through and totally missed that part, but you won’t have to make my same mistake.

DRIVING MORE TRAFFIC TO YOUR BLOGGER-TIP#1

I am determined to have a successful business, and I am so happy to get started with finding ways to get it out there. ... I have been researching current ways to drive traffic to your site and came across a really cool site called Blogosphere. They help drive traffic to your site by advertising various blogs. When you put their icon on your page, and someone clicks, your blog is automatically listed as a link on the advertisement. I KNOW I'm not explaining the way it works correctly so TEST IT OUT FOR YOURSELF. To the right there is a tab at the bottom that says "Blog Rush" click on it, watch the short video about how it works. (It is very informative). Then sign up, copy and paste the HTML code to your page. It's SO EASY and most importantly, IT'S FREE! To create an account it will ask you for the Title of your blog, URL to your blog, RSS FEED URL, and the subject matter of your blog. I didn’t even know what a “Feed URL” is, so for those of you who are still learning blogging, (like me) the feed URL for Blogspot is:

yourblognamehere.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

I am no computer guru and I attempted to read exactly what a RSS Feed Url is, and I still don't know even after reading the help section. (Maybe someone can educate me on what it is and what it's for). Any how I was able to figure it out and it takes Blogosphere takes 48 hours to approve your content. I AM SO EXCITED!! I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH ALREADY. To DRIVE MORE TRAFFIC to your blog, definitely check it out! I will let you know how it is working for me!.... More tomorrow,
MAGIC

Dreams & Aspirations

What I hope to share is what nobody is teaching me, "How to go from nothing to everything you have ever wanted." You see the problem is is that I am still not there just yet. I do hope to share what I am learning along the way in hopes that some one else won't make the same mistakes I have made in this journey. Someone once told me "What man finds a treasure and shares it?" Well I guess the answer is NO ONE... I have being trying to get my business going for EIGHT years. I have no start up capital. I have been working with only what resources I already have (meaning strictly as far as what my own money can take me).... That is why I created this blog. It is to benefit myself and others by sharing what resources we may come across to help others. It is for those of us who want to be a blessing and a help to others who are also trying to work on achieving dreams of their own. I am hoping to find and share information on improving your credit rating, increasing customer clientele, developing business credit and more.....

I am so tired of my CRAP job!

This is my story. About my life, what I am going through..... I think my life is almost a version of the movie "Pursuit of Happiness". There have been many times that I should have given up, but I haven't. I decided that a good way of releasing some stress is to just blog, a space of my own where HOPEFULLY, no one would judge me for how I'm feeling.

Well the first thing I am going to get off my chest:

I HATE MY JOB. Now don't get me wrong I am grateful I have one, because I definitely have bills and obligations, but it is so stressful. It is not my passion. I am only working their until my business can get completely launched and I can afford to work for myself. It seems like my business is taking forever to build. I decided to write, to share my feelings just to keep my sanity. There are times at work that I wish I could just punch my supervisor in her ugly face. I work with so many FAKE people. I have a select couple out of the bunch that I can go to. .

I have a secret talent but I have a CRAP JOB. I hate it. It doesn't pay enough. Just thinking about the fact that I have to actually go to work tomorrow and spend one more day not fulfilling what I was born to do DISGUSTS me. Having go and try to smile, having to do something I don't like doing which takes time from what I should be doing. But hey I gotta pay the rent.

It is so hard. I feel like I am all alone.
